Performance of Key US Stock Indices on Thursday, November 14, 2024

U.S. stock markets experienced a decline as the initial surge following Donald Trump’s election continued to settle.
The S&P 500 index decreased by 0.6% on Thursday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq composite both saw drops of 0.5% and 0.6%, respectively.
Several sectors that had previously surged after the election began to retract, contributing substantially to the downward trend.

Short-term Treasury yields fluctuated in response to recent economic data before ultimately rising, following comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who indicated that the bank is not rushing to implement cuts to interest rates.

On Thursday’s trading session:

The S&P 500 plummeted by 36.21 points, or 0.6%, closing at 5,949.17.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 207.33 points, equating to a decrease of 0.5%, finishing at 43,750.86.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 137.07 points, or 0.6%, settling at 19,107.65.

The Russell 2000 index, which tracks smaller companies, declined by 32.43 points, a notable 1.4% drop, bringing it to 2,336.94.

In terms of weekly performance:

The S&P 500 has decreased by 46.37 points, or 0.8%.

The Dow has experienced a decline of 238.13 points, also down by 0.5%.

The Nasdaq composite is down 179.13 points, a 0.9% decrease.

The Russell 2000 index has seen a decline of 62.70 points, or 2.6%.

Looking at the year-to-date performance:

The S&P 500 is up significantly by 1,179.34 points, representing an increase of 24.7%.

The Dow has risen by 6,061.32 points, marking a gain of 16.1%.

The Nasdaq composite is up by 4,096.30 points, a 27.3% increase.

The Russell 2000 index has gained 309.86 points, or 15.3%.
