The San Francisco Giants have announced the appointment of Randy Winn as their new vice president of player development.
Winn, who had a notable playing career with the Giants from 2005 to 2009, joins the front office following his hiring on Thursday by former teammate Buster Posey.
Posey recently took on the role of president of baseball operations after officially starting on September 29.
During his time with the Giants, Winn held a respectable batting average of .290 and accumulated 51 home runs, 262 runs batted in, and 73 stolen bases.
Across his entire 13-year Major League Baseball career, he boasted an overall average of .284, hitting 110 homers, driving in 662 RBIs, and stealing 215 bases.
Besides the Giants, his career also included stints with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays from 1998 to 2002, the Seattle Mariners from 2003 to 2005, as well as brief appearances with the New York Yankees and the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010.
Before this new role, Winn served the Giants in various capacities, including as a roving outfield and baserunning instructor from 2013 to 2016.
He was then a special assistant to the general manager from 2017 until 2018 and worked as a professional scout in 2019 under director of pro scouting, Zack Minasian, who has since been elevated to general manager effective November 1.
At 50 years old, Winn has been a familiar face for Giants fans, having contributed as an analyst on Giants broadcasts for NBC Sports Bay Area since 2013.
Furthermore, he recently took on the role of chairman of the Giants Community Fund, a position that underscores his commitment to community engagement.
Between 2011 and 2020, he also served as the president of the Baseball Assistance Team and continues to contribute as a member of its board.
