BOSTON — A strong gust of wind caused a large scaffolding plank to plummet to the ground near New England’s busiest train station, just missing pedestrians entering and exiting the facility.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported when the incident occurred last week at South Station, a central hub that accommodates subway, bus, and commuter rail services.
Surveillance footage released by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority captured the dramatic moment when the plank struck the sidewalk, narrowly bypassing a nearby pedestrian. Witnesses to the event reacted with shock, with some choosing to flee the scene.
According to city officials, the falling piece of rigging equipment came from a 46-story skyscraper located across the street from the station. As a result of this incident, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the safety breach.
