Rand Paul advocates for reinstating Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy in his new Senate chair role.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul announced on Thursday that he will take the helm of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. With this new responsibility, he plans to promptly address President-elect Donald Trump’s initiative to reinstate a policy that mandates asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while waiting for their immigration court hearings in the United States.

Paul will assume the position of committee chair following the Republican Party’s recent victory in the Senate elections. This role places him as the leader of a committee with extensive oversight of government functions, which includes crucial areas like the Department of Homeland Security. Previously, Paul held the position of ranking Republican on this committee during the period of Democratic leadership in the Senate.

In a statement, Paul explained his decision to lead this committee, emphasizing that Congress must reclaim its constitutional responsibilities for the well-being of the nation. He underscored the committee’s vital oversight and investigatory functions as essential in reasserting Congressional power.

As he embarks on his third term, Paul stated that a primary focus will be the reinstatement of the “Remain in Mexico” immigration policy, a significant element of Trump’s immigration agenda. This policy had been discontinued in 2022 by President Joe Biden, who faced criticism for it due to concerns over the safety of migrants in Mexico and the challenges they faced in securing legal representation.
