Longtime NBC presenter Craig Melvin selected to succeed Hoda Kotb for the opening segments of ‘Today’ show

NEW YORK — Veteran NBC anchor Craig Melvin has been chosen to take over from Hoda Kotb as co-host for the morning hours of the “Today” show, specifically during the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. segments.

Melvin is a well-known personality among “Today” viewers, as he currently leads the show’s third hour while also serving as the news anchor for the initial two hours of the program. He will continue to be a part of the third hour alongside Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Sheinelle Jones.

Libby Leist, the senior vice president of “Today,” expressed her enthusiasm for Melvin’s new role in a statement, highlighting his significant contributions to the show. “He’s been an integral and beloved part of our family. From breaking news in the field to interviewing presidents and covering multiple high-profile events like the Olympics and Super Bowls, Craig has demonstrated his extensive talent and versatility. He accomplishes all this while maintaining his charming Southern demeanor,” she stated.

Kotb is set to conclude her tenure on the show on January 10. She had announced her departure back in September. The “Today” program typically ranks third in morning viewership ratings, following ABC’s “Good Morning America.” NBC News has yet to make an announcement regarding who will fill Kotb’s other co-anchor position during the 10 a.m. hour, which she shares with Jenna Bush Hager.

During a broadcast on Thursday, Melvin shared his heartfelt appreciation, saying, “I’ve enjoyed just a lifetime of blessings, and this is the latest.” He fondly referred to Kotb and co-anchor Savannah Guthrie as “the sisters I never thought I needed.” He went on to credit Kotb, stating, “you saved the show,” a remark that acknowledged her impressive handling of the show’s transition following the Matt Lauer scandal.
