MELBOURNE, Australia — In a crucial match during the Asian qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup, Australia and Saudi Arabia played to a goalless draw on Thursday.
While there were moments of tension as the match progressed, overall it lacked significant quality and scoring opportunities.
In a thrilling finish, Sultan Al-Ghannam appeared to have clinched a victory for Saudi Arabia with a low shot from within the box. However, the goal was ultimately ruled out for offside, much to the relief of the crowd of 27,491 in attendance.
Early in the match, Australia was awarded a penalty kick following a challenge on Mitch Duke by Saudi goalkeeper Ahmed Al-Kassar. Nevertheless, a VAR review determined that the foul occurred just outside the penalty area, depriving Australia of an early chance to take the lead.
Saudi Arabia, which is also pursuing its seventh World Cup participation, came close to breaking the deadlock with a shot from Nasser Al-Dawsari, whose attempt was saved by Australian goalkeeper Joe Gauci at the near post.
The second half saw a decrease in offensive action, with Australia presenting the best chance as the match neared its conclusion. In a two-on-one scenario, Riley McGree’s shot destined for goal was expertly blocked by Saud Abdulhamid just six minutes before time.
Following this match, both teams remain tied, each accumulating six points from five games, and sitting four points behind Group C leader Japan.
In this competition format, only the top two teams from each group have the opportunity for automatic qualification, while the teams finishing in third and fourth place will progress to the next qualifying stage.
