SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Deommodore Lenoir’s journey in the NFL began with a few bumps along the way, notably when he unintentionally shared a video of an offseason practice on social media. This blunder resulted in a substantial fine for the San Francisco 49ers and their coach, Kyle Shanahan, as it breached the league’s no-contact practice regulations.
In his rookie season, Lenoir faced challenges on the field as well, including a critical moment in his third game where he allowed a long reception to Davante Adams. This play set up a game-winning field goal for Green Bay and left Lenoir questioning his abilities. However, he has since put that rocky start behind him and has evolved into a versatile cornerback capable of performing both inside and outside positions. His efforts culminated in a significant five-year, $92 million contract extension, solidifying his status among the top performers in his field.
“When my agent told me the deal was finalized, I couldn’t hold back my tears,” Lenoir recounted. “This contract could truly transform my family’s life for generations. It’s truly a blessing.”
Lenoir’s rise is remarkable considering he was drafted in the fifth round back in 2021 and faced a sluggish start. Despite early setbacks, including the social media incident that incurred penalties for both him and the team, Lenoir’s talent shone through. Shanahan noted the incident had both its frustrations and silver linings, as it underscored Lenoir’s potential and tenacity.
Initially, Lenoir feared the viral video may cost him his place on the team, but he can now look back and chuckle at the situation. “I can finally repay Kyle for Carter’s tuition,” he joked.
With this recent contract, Lenoir has now become the 12th highest-paid cornerback in the league in terms of average annual salary. This season, he has excelled in both slot and outside cornerback roles for the 49ers, giving up only 35 receptions on 56 targets and posting a 65 passer rating against.
“It’s already challenging to cover on the outside,” remarked All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner. “It’s rare to find someone capable of excelling in both coverage and run defense like Lenoir is right now. He’s having an All-Pro quality season.”
Lenoir has not allowed any touchdown passes this year and boasts two interceptions, six deflected passes, and one forced fumble. In addition, he returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown.
“He deserves this contract more than anyone,” said defensive end Nick Bosa. “He may not get all the recognition, but everyone within our organization recognizes his immense value.”
Signing Lenoir was a key focus for the 49ers, especially since their top two cornerbacks, including Charvarius Ward, were at risk of entering free agency. With Lenoir now locked in, coupled with promising rookie Renardo Green, the team has fortified its cornerback position for the future. The club attempted to finalize the contract before the season began, but negotiations only concluded successfully this week.
“I always knew I wanted to be here,” Lenoir expressed. “I wish we could have wrapped it up earlier, but I’m thrilled to have this deal, and I look forward to finishing my career as a 49er. Playing alongside such talented teammates drives me to elevate my game.”
In other news, tight end George Kittle (hamstring), defensive lineman Nick Bosa (hip), left tackle Trent Williams (ankle/rest), and defensive tackle Kevin Givens (groin) did not partake in practice. Shanahan anticipates both Kittle and Bosa will play this week. Running back Christian McCaffrey (Achilles tendon) had limited participation as the team manages his return after his season debut. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky (back) also sat out, leading to the signing of punter Pat O’Donnell to the practice squad as a precaution for Sunday. Meanwhile, Ward remains away from the team following the tragic passing of his one-year-old daughter on October 28, but Shanahan mentioned that Ward plans to return soon.
