MADRID — On Wednesday, Real Madrid’s midfielder Caroline Weir showcased her talents by contributing two assists and scoring a brilliant free kick in a commanding 7-0 victory over Twente in the Women’s Champions League.

Defender María Méndez made her mark on the match by netting two goals, both from headers following corner kicks. This impressive win came as Madrid built on their previous success, a 4-0 triumph against Celtic in their last home game in Group B. Chelsea currently tops the group as they targeted a third consecutive win in a match later against Celtic.

In another match, Wolfsburg’s Rebecka Blomqvist delivered an outstanding performance with a second-half hat trick, leading her team to a 5-0 victory at Galatasaray. This marked the first points for the two-time European champions in Group A. Later, AS Roma faced Lyon, both teams having accumulated six points after their initial two matches.

Madrid struck early, taking the lead in the third minute when Weir’s attempt towards the far post inadvertently turned into an assist for Signe Bruun, who converted from close range.

By the 16th minute, Méndez extended the lead to 2-0, following which Twente missed several opportunities to score. The third goal arrived in the 50th minute when France’s Naomie Feller headed in a well-placed cross from Weir.

Weir then scored her own goal in the 55th minute, sending a stunning 22-yard strike into the top corner of the goal.

Méndez added another to her tally in the 63rd minute, heading the ball into the net from a corner. Just two minutes later, right-back Oihane Hernandez capped off a brilliant solo effort, finishing a play she initiated by intercepting the ball in Twente’s half. In stoppage time, substitute Carla Camacho found the back of the net when Twente failed to clear another corner.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg’s dominance in Istanbul was evident, with their defender Marie Joelle Wedemeyer scoring an unmarked header from a corner in the 24th minute.

Blomqvist then netted her goals in the 63rd, 77th, and finally in stoppage time, with Vivien Endemann adding one more to wrap up the scoring. Wolfsburg dominated the game, firing off 33 shots with 14 on target, while Galatasaray managed just two shots on goal.

The second leg of these matches will take place next week.
