NEW YORK — Scott Wall, an NBA referee, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia earlier this year and is currently undergoing treatment, as announced by the National Basketball Referees Association.
To honor Wall during his battle, all referees will be using whistles adorned with the number 31, which corresponds to Wall’s referee jersey number, for the remainder of the current season. The referees’ union stated this gesture represents “solidarity with our brother” in their support for him.
Wall has undergone chemotherapy and experienced a 30-day hospital stay. The union noted that the medical team has successfully eradicated the leukemia cells from Wall’s body and he is now moving into the next phase of his treatment plan.
In his impressive career, Wall has officiated 1,530 games over 30 seasons in the NBA. The Florida-based referee was also chosen to officiate the NBA All-Star Game in 2012, which took place in Orlando.
