ATLANTA — A judge has determined that the individual facing murder charges in connection with a shooting incident in Atlanta that resulted in one fatality and four injuries is not fit to stand trial. This ruling was announced by a Fulton County judge on Tuesday, indicating that Deion Patterson lacks the ability to comprehend the legal proceedings against him as well as the capacity to assist his attorneys in his defense.
As a result of the judge’s decision, Patterson is set to receive mental health treatment, and a follow-up hearing is scheduled for three months from now to reassess his mental state.
In May 2023, Patterson was charged with one count of murder along with four counts of aggravated assault. Allegations suggest that he opened fire in the waiting area of a medical facility in Atlanta. He was apprehended a few hours later in Cobb County, situated just northwest of Atlanta.
The shooting claimed the life of 38-year-old Amy St. Pierre, who was employed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to officials from the CDC, St. Pierre had been engaged in innovative research focused on minimizing fatalities associated with pregnancy.
