EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Jaxson Hayes, the backup center for the Los Angeles Lakers, has sustained a sprained left ankle during a practice session. As a result of this injury, he will be unavailable for the upcoming game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.
The incident took place on Tuesday, and the Lakers have indicated that Hayes will be reassessed in approximately two weeks. The 7-foot player has been averaging 6.3 points and a personal record of 4.6 rebounds per game, serving as the primary backup for star player Anthony Davis. Currently, the only other player on the Lakers’ roster standing over 6-foot-9 is the recently acquired Christian Koloko, who has only participated in two games so far this season.
Hayes recently achieved a season-high of 12 points in a commanding 123-103 win over Toronto on Sunday night, stepping up significantly when Davis was forced to leave the game due to an eye injury inflicted by Jakob Poeltl in the third quarter. Just a week earlier, Hayes logged a season-high of 35 minutes on the court in Memphis, filling in for Davis, who was resting his sore heel.
Although Davis plans to participate in Wednesday’s game despite his recent eye injury, the Lakers will be missing both Hayes and fellow big man Christian Wood, who has encountered further issues in his recovery from knee surgery and has yet to play this season.
