BERLIN — German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has revealed his intention to request a vote of confidence from parliament on December 16, aiming to facilitate an early parliamentary election anticipated for February.

Scholz communicated his proposals during a parliamentary address on Wednesday, just a week following the disbandment of his three-party coalition government.

Originally, Scholz had planned for an early election to take place by late March, prior to the regularly scheduled elections in September 2025.

However, pressure from the center-right Christian opposition prompted a demand for a more expedited parliamentary vote to hasten the upcoming election.

Ultimately, political leaders from various parties reached a consensus on Wednesday regarding the dates for both the vote of confidence and the subsequent election.
