BONNYRIGG, Scotland — A small Scottish football club that once counted actor Sean Connery among its players has encountered a setback, receiving a six-point penalty due to the sloping condition of its playing field.
Now, Bonnyrigg Rose is appealing to its supporters to contribute over £100,000 (approximately $127,000) to rectify the uneven pitch and avoid any future sanctions.
Promoted to the Scottish League Two, the lowest level of the country’s professional leagues, in 2022, Bonnyrigg has been urged by football authorities to address the issue of its uneven field at New Dundas Park, ensuring compliance with league standards.
The club was handed the points deduction on Tuesday for not adhering to league regulations concerning the gradient of the field. They have until the end of January to submit details about their funding strategy and plans for leveling the field beginning next summer.
In light of this news, the club has reached out to the community, located just outside of Edinburgh, for assistance.
“The Rosey Posey, the heartbeat of our community, needs your help,” Bonnyrigg stated. “We are fundraising to support efforts to level the pitch and enhance drainage systems to meet league requirements.”
After their annual general meeting in October, Bonnyrigg indicated that they anticipate the overall cost to exceed £100,000 and expressed concerns over delays in obtaining any governmental financial support. The club had aimed to have the work completed “ahead of the 2025/26 season.”
Bonnyrigg Rose proudly mentions Connery, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 90, as one of its distinguished former players. The Scottish FA records that Connery played as a right winger in the junior team during 1951 and 1952.
