Northern Illinois tops Monmouth with a score of 79-66

DEKALB, Ill. — In an impressive performance, Quentin Jones recorded 22 points to help lead Northern Illinois to a 79-66 triumph over Monmouth on Tuesday evening.

Jones demonstrated excellent shooting, hitting 6 of 12 attempts overall, including a solid 3 for 6 from beyond the arc, alongside sinking 7 of 10 free throws, contributing significantly to his team’s efforts as they improved to 1-1 for the season.

Ethan Butler had a noteworthy outing as well, contributing 15 points with an efficient shooting line of 6 for 9, and knocked down 2 of 3 free throws. He also made his mark defensively with three important blocks. Meanwhile, James Dent Jr. posted a strong all-around game with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks, showcasing his versatility on the court.

On the opposing side, Abdi Bashir Jr. stood out for the Hawks (0-3), leading his team with 25 points and grabbing two steals. Madison Durr was another key contributor for Monmouth with 14 points, while Justin Ray chipped in with 10 points.

Northern Illinois took the lead just 2:30 before the end of the first half and maintained that advantage throughout the remainder of the game. The halftime score sat at 42-34, with Jones responsible for 15 of those points. The Huskies extended their margin to 51-34 in the second half, propelled by a 9-0 offensive outburst that allowed them to assert control over the contest. Kailon Nicholls also had a solid second half, leading his team with eight points during that period and finishing the game with a total of 10 points.

This victory sets a positive tone for Northern Illinois as they continue their season, while Monmouth looks to regroup after falling to 0-3.
