AUSTIN, Texas — In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the Texas Longhorns triumphed over Chicago State with a commanding score of 105-58 on Tuesday evening. Tre Johnson led the charge for Texas, contributing 19 points to the victory while also helping five teammates reach double figures in scoring.
Johnson, recognized as the SEC freshman of the week, entered the game with an average of 28.5 points and a shooting percentage of 56% from beyond the arc. He showcased his talent, going 6 for 9 from the field, which included 4 out of 6 from three-point range, all within a 22-minute playtime.
Other key contributors for the Longhorns included Ze’rik Onyema with 18 points, Arthur Kaluma who posted 15 points along with eight rebounds, Kadin Shedrick adding 12 points, and Julian Larry finishing with 10 points. As a team, Texas shot an impressive 57% from the floor and dominated the scoring in the paint with a significant 50-18 advantage.
The Cougars, during the game, were led by Jalen Forrest and Matthew Robinson, each scoring 14 points, while Saxby Sunderland contributed another 10 points. However, Chicago State struggled offensively and ended the game shooting only 30% from the field.
The Longhorns established a commanding lead early on, going into halftime with a 32-point advantage. They extended their lead further by unleashing a 17-0 run, fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Johnson. This impressive stretch allowed Texas to stretch its lead to as much as 53 points midway through the second half.
In the first half, Texas shot 53% and saw Johnson score 10 of his points. His contribution included scoring five points during a dominant 12-0 run to start the game, setting the tone for the remainder of the half. Later, he added five more points at the conclusion of a 13-0 run, propelling the Longhorns to their largest lead of the half at 36 points, with the halftime score at 52-18.
