Caitlin Clark transitions from basketball court to golf course for LPGA pro-am event

BELLEAIR, Fla. — Caitlin Clark has a distinct focus as she prepares to participate in an LPGA pro-am.
“I’ve been trying to practice as much as possible,” Clark expressed on Tuesday. “I’m just an average golfer. I’m bound to have a few good shots and some bad ones. My main goal is to avoid hitting anyone who is standing outside the ropes. Above all, it’s going to be a fun experience.”

The standout player, who recently earned the title of WNBA Rookie of the Year, was invited to engage in Wednesday’s pro-am at Pelican Golf Club, held in anticipation of The Annika event. This tournament is sponsored by Gainbridge, a company that has an endorsement agreement with Clark.

One of her recent engagements included participation in an LPGA Women’s Leadership Summit alongside tournament host Annika Sorenstam and former model and business executive Kathy Ireland.

During the event, Clark will team up with Nelly Korda, who currently holds the top spot in the women’s golf rankings and has secured the LPGA Player of the Year award. On the back nine, Clark will join Sorenstam, a legendary player who retired in 2008 and now competes in senior golf tournaments.

Following the elimination of the Indiana Fever from the WNBA playoffs, Clark had joked about continuing to play golf until the weather turned too chilly in Indiana. “I even joked about becoming a professional golfer,” she said with a laugh.

However, she admitted, “I’m not serious about turning pro. I’ve made an effort to practice, although the reality is that there’s only so much one can do. So you just cross your fingers and hope for the best,” she explained on Tuesday. “That quip about going pro was meant in jest. I truly enjoy it. I love spending time outdoors and making it competitive with my friends.”

Clark further added, “It’s a challenge, and I’m excited to be here, surrounded by some of the best players and having a good time.”

This event marks her second pro-am appearance, which typically draws a mix of athletes and entertainers. Her first experience was at the John Deere Classic in July 2023 while she was still a student at Iowa.
