NEW YORK — Following last week’s election, New Yorkers were offered a unique opportunity to express their emotions by using sticky notes in a bustling subway tunnel.
The initiative was conceived by artist Matthew Chavez, who initially created a similar space in a passageway connecting two subway lines after the 2016 election.
“Individuals often approach me, spend just a minute, and express their gratitude, saying, ‘Wow, this is amazing. This made my day. This made my week. I really needed this,'” Chavez remarked.
He noted that while this project was not directly connected to the election of Donald Trump as president, the sentiments people share are inevitably influenced by current political contexts.
As Chavez spoke, hastily written notes began to fill the tiled walls beneath 14th Street in Manhattan.
Some poignant examples included: “RIP DEMOCRACY,” “WORLD PEACE NOW,” and “What will our next revolution look like?” One note humorously declared, “Knicks really better win tonight! The horrors persist but so do I.” (The New York Knicks did indeed win, overpowering the Milwaukee Bucks 116-94.)
Danielle Guy shared her thoughts, stating, “I mentioned that I choose kindness even when it’s hard because I’ve been finding it challenging not to retaliate when I encounter negativity from others.”
Another participant, Mallie Lyons, praised the subway therapy project, saying, “I feel like this is an excellent idea. Being in a space where people can easily see the feelings and thoughts of others is truly beautiful.”
Although the project concluded over the weekend, Chavez is actively seeking new locations for future projects, even if they may not match the charm of the subway tunnel.
“There’s so much to be said,” Chavez stated. “I love being in places where individuals rush by. They take a moment, let something off their minds, and then continue on their way.”
