MEDINA TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A man has been fatally shot by law enforcement following a police pursuit after he allegedly abducted his 7-year-old daughter from a relative’s residence in Ohio. Fortunately, the child suffered no physical injuries during the incident.
Charles Alexander, 43, who did not have legal custody of the girl, took her from a home in Empire around 3 p.m. on Monday. This occurred after an intense argument that escalated into a physical confrontation. Shortly thereafter, authorities initiated an Amber Alert to locate the young girl.
Law enforcement officers attempted to stop a vehicle operated by Alexander around 8 p.m. in Brunswick, but he chose to flee, leading to a pursuit that involved multiple police departments along Interstate 71 south, according to the Medina County Sheriff’s Office. His vehicle was eventually immobilized by tire deflation devices used by the police, and Alexander exited the highway at Route 18 in Medina Township.
After exiting, Alexander drove into a parking lot of a nearby fast-food restaurant and began communicating with several dispatch centers via phone before the tragic confrontation occurred, as reported by the sheriff’s office.
While the sheriff’s office confirmed that multiple gunshots were fired during the altercation, they did not disclose whether Alexander was armed or the specific circumstances that led officers to discharge their weapons. They noted that no officers were injured in the incident.
Additionally, the sheriff’s statement did not clarify if Alexander’s daughter was present in the vehicle during the shooting. However, authorities confirmed that she was located in Medina and was returned to family members later in the day. Her identity has not been released to the public.
