LONDON — Frank Auerbach, a prominent artist who emigrated from Nazi Germany to the UK as a young boy, has passed away at the age of 93.
The news of his death was confirmed on Tuesday by his gallery, Frankie Rossi Art Projects, which reported that he died at his home in London the previous day.

Auerbach was born in Berlin in 1931 and became a child refugee when he moved to Britain in 1939.
Following his education at St. Martin’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, he dedicated the next 70 years to his passion for painting.
He maintained a studio in north London, where he worked continuously from 1954 until his passing, reportedly putting in an impressive 364 days of work each year.

As a key figure in the post-war “School of London,” Auerbach was known for his figurative painting style, alongside contemporaries such as Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and Leon Kossoff.
Despite the evolution of artistic trends, he remained steadfast in his approach, often applying thick layers of paint to his canvases to give rise to nearly abstract yet recognizable landscapes.
Auerbach represented the UK at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 1986, where his exceptional work earned him the coveted Golden Lion award.
Most recently, an exhibition titled “Frank Auerbach: The Charcoal Heads” was showcased at London’s Courtauld Gallery, having opened in February.

In his later years, Auerbach’s artwork fetched substantial sums at auction. Notably, in 2023, his piece “Mornington Crescent,” inspired by the urban landscape surrounding his home, was sold at Sotheby’s for an impressive $7.1 million, marking a new record for the artist.
Geoffrey Parton, the director of Frankie Rossi Art Projects, expressed the deep loss felt by Auerbach’s friends and admirers, stating, “We have lost a dear friend and remarkable artist but take comfort knowing his voice will resonate for generations to come.”

Frank Auerbach is survived by his son, Jacob Auerbach.
