Rennes has announced the appointment of former Argentina national team coach Jorge Sampaoli as their new head coach in Ligue 1. The 64-year-old, who returns to France after a previous coaching spell with Marseille, has put pen to paper on a contract lasting one and a half years.
Sampaoli steps in to fill the role left vacant by Julien Stephan, who was let go from his position last week. Rennes aims to revitalize its performance, having dropped to 13th in the Ligue 1 standings, trailing 18 points behind the league leaders, Paris Saint-Germain, after just 11 matches.
Arnaud Pouille, Rennes’ executive chairman and managing director, expressed confidence in Sampaoli, highlighting his international reputation for professionalism and compassion. Pouille noted, “He is a coach who fosters strong connections with his players and staff, and he is known for his loyalty and commitment. We need his energy to reinvigorate the club and confront the competition with renewed determination.”
Sampaoli has an extensive coaching resume that includes experiences in various leagues around the world, including stints in Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Spain, and Brazil. He previously guided Marseille to a successful season that saw them qualify for the Champions League but left the club suddenly in July 2022 due to disagreements about player transfers.
