Mauritius has experienced a significant political shift as the opposition coalition has secured a remarkable victory in the recent elections, sweeping all parliamentary seats. This outcome represents a clear disapproval of the current government, led by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.
Results released on Monday from various regions indicated that Jugnauth’s governing coalition did not manage to capture any of the available 62 parliamentary seats that were directly contested by voters. Acknowledging the defeat, Jugnauth stated that his coalition, the Militant Socialist Movement, was facing a considerable loss as it became increasingly evident that the opposition was leading in each of the 21 constituencies across the nation.
The victory for the Alliance for Change coalition marks the return of Navin Ramgoolam, who previously served as prime minister from 1995 to 2000 and again from 2005 until 2014. Jugnauth had been hoping to extend his tenure since taking office in 2017, but his administration was marred by corruption allegations following the leak of recordings involving politicians and business figures.
In his remarks after the election, Jugnauth acknowledged the electorate’s choice, offering his best wishes to the country. While the official results, which will also include two seats from Rodrigues Island, are anticipated to be announced on Tuesday, the opposition has already claimed all 60 seats disclosed so far. Additionally, eight members will be appointed by the Electoral Supervisory Council, bringing the total number of parliamentary seats to 70.
This election marked the 12th since Mauritius attained independence from the United Kingdom in 1968, with at least 1 million registered voters casting their ballots. Located approximately 2,000 kilometers off the east coast of Africa, Mauritius is recognized for its political stability and has cultivated a thriving economy supported by its finance, tourism, and agricultural sectors since gaining independence.
