Authorities in Zhuhai, a city located in southern China, announced on Monday that they have apprehended a 62-year-old individual following an alarming incident where he drove his car into a group of individuals exercising at a local sports facility before fleeing the scene.
Reports indicate that one of the hospitals caring for the victims treated over 20 injured people, as stated by state media outlets.
The man, referred to only by his family name, Fan, was identified by local police, in line with standard practices in the region. According to a police statement, the vehicle struck “a number of” pedestrians during the evening hours on Monday.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether this event was a deliberately orchestrated attack or merely an unfortunate accident. Authorities have not specified any motives, and investigations are ongoing to uncover more details.
This unsettling event took place just before China’s annual air show, which is held in Zhuhai, creating additional tension in the community.
The sports facility located in the Xiangzhou District frequently attracts large crowds, drawing hundreds of locals on a regular basis. In light of the incident, the sports center has announced its immediate closure until further notice.
China has experienced a series of violent events targeting unsuspecting victims, including children. Case in point, just last month, a 50-year-old man was taken into custody for allegedly launching a knife attack on children at a school in Beijing, leaving five individuals injured. Additionally, in September, a knife attack at a Shanghai supermarket resulted in the tragic deaths of three people.
