KENNESAW, Ga. — Brian Bohannon has officially stepped down from his role as the head coach of Kennesaw State’s football team as the Owls find themselves struggling with a 1-8 record in their debut season at the FBS level.

Bohannon has been at the helm since the program’s inception in 2015, achieving a notable career record of 72 wins to 38 losses. During his tenure, he secured three championships in the Big South Conference and led the team to the playoffs four times in the FCS.

Despite his success, the transition to FBS football has proved challenging for the Owls. They completed their last season with a 3-6 record during the transition and started their current season with a streak of six consecutive defeats. A glimmer of hope came with an unexpected victory over Liberty, ending the Flames’ impressive 17-game regular-season winning streak.

Unfortunately, this was followed by two more losses, including a heart-wrenching double-overtime defeat to UTEP, which solidified the decision for Bohannon to resign.

Chandler Burks, the co-offensive coordinator, has been appointed as the interim head coach for the remaining three games while the university begins its search for a new leader for the team.

“Coach Brian Bohannon informed me this morning that he has decided to step down as our head football coach,” stated athletic director Milton Overton. “Coach Bohannon has been instrumental in establishing Kennesaw State in the football landscape. He dedicated his heart and soul to this program and represented our university with unparalleled professionalism and integrity.”

Bohannon’s leadership was pivotal in elevating Kennesaw State quickly to one of the premier FCS teams, including two trips to the national quarterfinals and two further appearances in the second round of the playoffs.

The Owls achieved seven consecutive winning seasons with a stellar record of 63-18 while competing in the Big South Conference. However, following the move to the ASUN Conference in 2022, the team’s performance deteriorated to a 5-6 record, and they faced even greater struggles after their transition to an independent schedule prior to joining Conference USA this season.
