WASHINGTON — In a thrilling encounter during the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs, Trinity Rodman played a pivotal role in leading the Washington Spirit to a 2-1 comeback victory over Bay FC on Sunday.
The match, dominated for a significant period by defensive strategies, saw Bay FC break the deadlock in the 82nd minute when Asisat Oshoala capitalized on a cross from Penelope Hocking. The moment silenced the home crowd of 19,215 at Audi Field as Hocking, after being unmarked, connected with a pass from Alyssa Malonson that had been sent across the box from the left.
The Spirit quickly responded just three minutes later when Tara McKeown, who has transitioned from forward to centerback this season, intercepted a clearance attempt by Bay FC. She charged forward and executed a precise shot into the lower left corner from the edge of the penalty area, leveling the score at 1-1.
Notably, this match marked only the second instance in league history where both the equalizing and go-ahead goals were scored following the 80th minute.
Although Rodman did not find the back of the net during this match, her impactful cross led to an own goal in extra time. A defensive mishap from Bay FC’s Caprice Dydasco, who misjudged the trajectory of Rodman’s cross, allowed the ball to glance off her and into the goal, putting the Spirit in a favorable position six minutes into extra time.
Throughout the first half, both teams exhibited strong defensive skills, with Bay FC having a narrow advantage in shots (7-5). However, the Spirit, known for their offensive prowess with 51 goals during the regular season, ended the match with a total of 21 shots, while Bay’s goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland successfully made five saves.
Despite facing several injury challenges throughout the season, the Spirit (18-6-2) finished in a commendable second place. Key players, including rookie Croix Bethune who topped the league with 10 assists, suffered significant injuries, with Bethune tearing her meniscus in August and Andi Sullivan facing an ACL tear in October. Joint leading goal scorer Ouleymata Sarr has also been sidelined with a back injury since September.
On the other hand, Bay FC (11-14-1), as an expansion team, managed to qualify for the playoffs by securing their spot in the final match of the regular season after a late-season surge.
The Washington Spirit is set to host either the Portland Thorns or Gotham FC in the semifinals of the NWSL next weekend.
