PARIS — Authorities in Paris announced that a substantial security presence will be in place for the upcoming soccer match between France and Israel, scheduled for Thursday as part of the UEFA Nations League. This decision follows a distressing incident involving violent attacks on Israeli fans during a game in Amsterdam just a week prior, leading to heightened concerns about safety.

Police officials reported the deployment of 4,000 officers alongside 1,600 personnel from the stadium’s staff, all tasked with ensuring the security of attendees in and around the Stade de France, as well as on public transport systems. Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez emphasized the high-stakes nature of the event due to existing tensions, stating that any form of violence would not be tolerated.

In terms of logistics, about 2,500 police officers will be stationed near the stadium, while an additional 1,500 will monitor the wider Paris area and transit networks. Nuñez outlined that an anti-terrorism security perimeter would be established around the venue. Heightened security measures, including thorough pat-downs and bag inspections, will be implemented to mitigate risks.

He further mentioned that French organizers have established communication with Israeli security officials to ensure comprehensive preparations for the match. This collaborative effort comes after a group of Israeli fans faced assaults in Amsterdam last week, instigated by individuals responding to provocative calls on social media targeting Jewish people. The disturbing incidents resulted in several injuries and numerous arrests, prompting widespread condemnation across various international platforms.

Additionally, on Sunday, police in Amsterdam took action against demonstrators who participated in an unauthorized protest linked to the violence against the Israeli supporters. This incident underlined the ongoing tensions associated with the recent events.

French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau affirmed on Friday that the match will proceed as scheduled, highlighting the importance of not allowing fear to dictate actions. He noted the significance of the event, particularly as global sports fans unite this year during the Paris Olympics to honor the “universal values” inherent in sports.
