BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — In a thrilling finish, Cam Edwards made a remarkable 48-yard touchdown run with just 2:39 left in the game, leading UConn to overcome a daunting 17-point gap and secure a 31-23 victory over UAB on Saturday. This exciting match took place at Protective Stadium, drawing a crowd of 18,351 fans.
With this win, UConn not only celebrated its seventh victory of the season but also matched the program’s record for the largest comeback, previously achieved in a 2003 game against Western Michigan. The Huskies, now standing at 7-3, secured their first winning record since the 2010 season when they finished with an 8-5 mark.
Nick Evers, the starting quarterback, exited the game in the third quarter due to an injury, paving the way for Joe Fagnano to step in. Fagnano quickly made an impact, connecting with Shamar Porter on a 6-yard touchdown pass during the initial moments of a productive fourth quarter, which featured three touchdown drives for UConn.
Defensively, UConn had an outstanding performance, forcing a total of four turnovers, a season high for the team. The pivotal fourth turnover was a fumble recovery at their own 41-yard line, which Edwards transformed into a long touchdown run. UAB had an opportunity to extend their lead but was thwarted when Chris Freeman missed a 36-yard field goal, and UConn capitalized by forcing another turnover on downs to clinch their victory.
UAB, now at 2-7 for the season, had a difficult outing, with quarterback Jalen Kitna being intercepted twice throughout the game. This matchup showcased resilience from the UConn team, which was able to rally and demonstrate their determination to secure a well-deserved victory.
