MACOMB, Ill. — Draylen Ellis showcased an impressive performance by throwing for three touchdown passes, while Tevin Carter contributed with two rushing touchdowns, leading Tennessee State to a commanding 45-20 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday.
Ellis completed 11 of 18 throws for a total of 182 yards, despite having one interception. On the ground, Carter registered 57 yards from eight carries. With this victory, the Tigers, who now boast a 7-3 record and a 4-2 standing in the Big South-Ohio Valley, achieved their highest win total since 2016.
The game began with CJ Evans scoring a 15-yard touchdown run as part of a strong opening drive. Shortly before the end of the first quarter, Ellis connected with Gerard Bulluck, who was wide open in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown reception.
Western Illinois managed to put points on the board with a field goal, but Ellis quickly responded, hitting Bryant Williams with a 38-yard bomb for a spectacular diving touchdown catch. This was followed by Carter rushing off tackle for a short touchdown, extending Tennessee State’s lead to 28-3.
Nathan Lamb then threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Camern Smith to help Western Illinois score their first touchdown, followed by Antonio Chadha making his second field goal, reducing the halftime deficit to 28-13.
During the third quarter, Ellis and Karate Brenson collaborated effectively for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Though Lamb scored on a rushing touchdown shortly after, Tennessee State countered with a field goal and Carter added a standout 39-yard run to secure the win.
For Western Illinois, Lamb completed 24 out of 45 passes for a total of 266 yards.
