MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In an impressive display of dominance, the 16th-ranked West Virginia women’s basketball team crushed Niagara with a score of 110-41 on Saturday. Jordan Harrison led the team with 21 points, while Sydney Shaw contributed 20 points to help propel the Mountaineers to a decisive victory, improving their record to 2-0.
West Virginia’s defense was a key factor in this overwhelming win, forcing an astonishing 44 turnovers from the Niagara offense, which resulted in 53 points for the Mountaineers. Additionally, they showcased their prowess on the boards, out-rebounding Niagara 49-31, including a significant 13-rebound advantage on the offensive glass, leading to 21 second-chance points. Points in the paint were heavily in favor of the Mountaineers, who scored 66 to Niagara’s mere 16.
Jordan Thomas also made a notable contribution with 14 points, while Ja’Naiya Quinerly and Kylee Blacksten each chipped in 11 points. Zya Nugent reached a career milestone by scoring seven points, bringing her total to over 1,000 points. Kyah Watson dominated the rebounding game, finishing with 13 boards.
For Niagara, Amelia Strong was the top scorer with 14 points, but the team faced significant challenges, with three players fouling out and two others finishing with four fouls each.
The game got off to a fast start for West Virginia as they grabbed a 27-9 lead after the opening quarter, highlighted by a remarkable 19-0 scoring run. During various stretches of play, Niagara struggled offensively, missing six straight shots and committing nine turnovers over nearly a six-minute span. In the second quarter, the Mountaineers scored the first 14 points and extended their lead to 41-9, eventually heading to the locker room with a commanding 56-15 advantage at halftime.
The dominance continued in the second half, with West Virginia embarking on a 16-0 run in the third quarter, extending their lead to over 50 points, followed by a 17-0 run in the fourth that propelled their lead beyond 70 points.
