CINCINNATI — In a thrilling matchup on Saturday, Nicco Marchiol contributed significantly to West Virginia’s victory over Cincinnati, throwing for one touchdown and adding another on the ground. The Mountaineers’ defense played a crucial role, forcing Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby into three turnovers, which translated into 17 points for the team, leading to a final score of 31-24 in favor of West Virginia.

With this win, the Mountaineers have now secured their fourth consecutive victory over the Bearcats, improving their record to 5-4 overall and 4-2 within the Big 12 Conference. This result denied Cincinnati the chance to achieve bowl eligibility, leaving them with a record of 5-4 and 3-3 in conference play.

West Virginia’s defense made a significant impact, highlighted by two scoring takeaways. Early in the second quarter, free safety Anthony Wilson Jr. intercepted Sorsby’s pass, returning it an impressive 79 yards for a touchdown. This pick-six initiated a dominant stretch for the Mountaineers, who scored 24 unanswered points, culminating in a commanding 24-7 lead deep into the third quarter.

However, Cincinnati responded with urgency, quickly scoring two touchdowns to narrow the deficit to just 24-21. With 7:16 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats regained possession, poised to either tie the game or take the lead.

In a decisive moment, West Virginia’s defense stepped up again. Tyrin Bradley Jr. intercepted a backward pass from Sorsby and dashed 14 yards into the end zone for a defensive touchdown. The play was reviewed but ultimately upheld, extending the Mountaineers’ lead to 10 points with just 3:30 left in the game.

Though Cincinnati managed to convert a 29-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining, making it a one-score contest at 31-24, the Mountaineers recovered the subsequent onside kick, securing their victory.

Looking ahead, West Virginia will face Arizona State at home next Saturday, while Cincinnati will travel to Iowa State for their upcoming matchup.
