Coco Gauff achieved a significant milestone by winning the WTA Finals for the first time, overcoming Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen with a final score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2) in a thrilling match on Saturday.
At just 20 years old, Gauff staged an incredible comeback after finding herself down 2-0 and 5-3 in the decisive third set. She even faced the prospect of defeat, being just two points away from losing the match at one point.
Despite the pressure, Gauff managed to push the set into a tiebreak, where she surged ahead, winning the first six points. Even as Zheng attempted to respond, Gauff ultimately clinched her victory on her third match point with a stunning forehand winner as she approached the net.
Throughout her journey to the final at this season-ending event in Riyadh, Gauff notably defeated the world’s top players, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.
Meanwhile, Zheng was looking to wrap up a remarkable season, which included her first appearance in a grand slam final at the Australian Open, in addition to securing China’s inaugural Olympic tennis singles gold medal.
In the doubles category, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe triumphed over the duo of Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic and Taylor Townsend from the United States, winning 7-5, 6-3 in their final match.
