ATLANTA — Quarterback Cam Ward of Miami has made headlines with yet another significant achievement in his collegiate football career. This past Saturday, he became the Hurricanes’ record holder for touchdown passes in a single season. During the game against Georgia Tech, Ward threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Arroyo in the first quarter, marking his 30th scoring pass of the season.
Ward has now achieved a feat no other FBS quarterback has this year, being the first to reach 30 touchdown passes. Before this game, he was tied with the legendary Steve Walsh for the school’s single-season record, a benchmark set back in 1988 when Walsh recorded 29 touchdown passes for the Hurricanes.
In his fifth year of eligibility, Ward has had an extensive career, beginning in the FCS with Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington State and finally to Miami. He stands out in NCAA history, being one of only five players across all divisions to surpass 17,000 career passing yards. At the start of the game, he was ranked fifth on that prestigious list with 17,022 yards. The 74-yard throw increased his total, propelling him to third place, overtaking both Tyson Bagent (17,034) and Timmy Chang (17,072).
Currently, only two players rank higher than Ward: Dillon Gabriel sits at second with 17,530 yards, and Case Keenum leads with 19,217 yards. As he commenced his game with a total of 3,146 yards for the season, this figure has already placed him among the top ten in a single season for any Miami player. Given his current performance, it’s likely he will eclipse a long-standing record that has been in place for four decades. The Miami record of 3,642 passing yards was set by Bernie Kosar in 1984.
With impressive statistics and milestones stacking up for Ward, he continues to be a pivotal figure in collegiate football this season.
