PHOENIX — Justin Heap, a Republican member of the Arizona legislature, has been chosen to lead elections in Maricopa County, which is the largest county in the state.
The announcement regarding Heap’s victory was made on Friday evening.
Heap has been vocal about his concerns regarding the election processes in Maricopa County, which serves a population of approximately 4.5 million residents, labeling them as insecure.
His journey to this position began with a victory in the Republican primary held in July, where he defeated the incumbent Recorder Stephen Richer, who had defended the current election administration practices.
In the general election, Heap went on to overcome Democratic candidate Tim Stringham.
Heap has expressed intentions to enhance security measures pertaining to early ballots, as well as how ballots are transported and stored.
Additionally, his election comes in the backdrop of claims from President Donald Trump and his associates about alleged widespread fraud affecting the 2020 election outcomes, claims that have been widely discredited.
