SAN DIEGO — In an exciting match-up, Eli Sanders showcased his talent with two impressive touchdown runs in the opening quarter, while Devon Dampier played a crucial role in the game’s final moments with a key touchdown pass, leading New Mexico to a narrow 21-16 victory over San Diego State on Friday night.

Sanders’ first touchdown came from a remarkable 51-yard run, finishing off a four-play, 99-yard drive during New Mexico’s second possession of the game. He followed that up with another explosive play, dashing 68 yards for a touchdown on the Lobos’ very next play from scrimmage, which propelled New Mexico to a commanding 14-3 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Despite the early setback, San Diego State didn’t back down. They rallied back with 13 consecutive points to take a 16-14 lead heading into the final quarter. However, Dampier connected with Ryan Davis for an 8-yard touchdown pass with just over 13 minutes to go, putting New Mexico back on top for the win.

Throughout the matchup, Sanders was a standout performer, carrying the ball 16 times for an impressive 173 yards. Dampier also made significant contributions, completing 16 of 24 passes for 175 yards and rushing 16 times for an additional 120 yards. On the other side, San Diego State’s Marquez Cooper managed to accumulate 123 yards on 35 carries, while quarterback Danny O’Neil threw for 195 yards, completing 26 of 41 attempts.

San Diego State’s scoring efforts included Gabriel Plascencia’s second field goal and O’Neil’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Cooper, which allowed them to narrow the gap to 14-13 by halftime. They then took the lead in the third quarter, culminating a significant 16-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a 28-yard field goal from Plascencia with just 1:39 left in the quarter.

This victory marked a significant turnaround for New Mexico, ending a long streak of nine consecutive losses to San Diego State. The performance showcased the Lobos’ determination and resilience, setting a hopeful tone for their season’s final stretch.
