WILMINGTON, N.C. — In an exciting matchup on Friday night, Donovan Newby propelled UNC Wilmington to a 92-84 victory over Georgia Southern, scoring an impressive 33 points.
Newby demonstrated his shooting prowess, making 6 of 11 field goals, including 2 of 7 from beyond the arc, while excelling at the free-throw line by converting 19 of 21 attempts.
His stellar performance helped the Seahawks improve to a record of 2-0 this season.
Khamari McGriff also made significant contributions, tallying 21 points as he hit 7 of 9 shots from the field and 7 of 10 free throws, along with collecting 12 rebounds and blocking three shots.
Additionally, Noah Ross added 13 points to the scoreboard after shooting 3 of 7 in field goals and 7 of 10 from the charity stripe.
On the other side, the Eagles of Georgia Southern were led by Dontae Horne, who scored 23 points.
Teammate Adante’ Holiman chipped in with 14 points, while Bradley Douglas contributed 12 points to the team’s cause.
In the first half, Newby accounted for 11 points, but UNC Wilmington found itself trailing 37-34 at halftime.
However, the momentum shifted in the second half as Josh Corbin closed out the game with the final six points, securing the Seahawks’ eight-point victory.
