BROOKINGS, S.D. — In a thrilling matchup on Friday evening, South Dakota State triumphed over No. 21 Creighton with a final score of 76-71, marking an upsetting start for the Bluejays in their season opener. Brooklyn Meyer led the charge for the Jackrabbits with 17 points, while Madison Mathiowetz contributed 13 points to the victory.

The game kicked off with South Dakota State racing out to a quick 7-0 lead. However, Creighton responded effectively, managing to take a narrow 13-12 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Bluejays maintained their momentum through the second quarter, entering halftime with a slim 31-28 advantage.

The tide shifted midway through the third quarter when South Dakota State regained control, fueled by an impressive stretch where Meyer scored seven consecutive points as part of an 11-0 run, establishing a commanding 47-39 lead.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Jackrabbits continued their dominance with a strong opening 12-2 run, spearheaded by Haleigh Timmer, who scored eight points in that span. Although Creighton fought back in the final minutes with Molly Mogensen scoring 10 consecutive points, South Dakota State maintained their composure. They secured their victory by converting 4 of 6 free throws in the last 90 seconds, ensuring a lead of no less than five points.

In addition to Meyer and Mathiowetz, Timmer finished the game with 12 points, while Mesa Byom recorded 11 points along with nine rebounds, and Paige Meyer contributed 10 points. South Dakota State, boasting a record of 2-0, is coming off a successful campaign that included their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Jackrabbits were predicted to be the frontrunners in the Summit League for the upcoming season, with Brooklyn Meyer being honored as the preseason player of the year.

Creighton’s leading scorer was Lauren Jensen, who netted 23 points. Mogensen supported with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Kiani Lockett and Morgan Maly added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

This game also served as the home opener for the Jackrabbits at their newly upgraded First Bank & Trust Arena, setting an exciting tone for their season ahead.
