LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Olivia Cochran contributed 15 points, while freshman Tajianna Roberts added 11 as the 17th-ranked Louisville Cardinals triumphed over Southern Indiana with a score of 75-51 on Friday night.
With this victory, Louisville enhanced its strong home opener record under head coach Jeff Walz to 16 wins against just 2 losses, achieving a streak of nine consecutive wins since the 2015-16 season in these opening matches.
In their previous game, the Cardinals (1-1) experienced a setback, losing 65-59 to No. 5 UCLA on Monday. Notably, Roberts distinguished herself by becoming the first Louisville freshman since the 2020 season to score over 20 points in her debut, despite the team’s loss.
The game against Southern Indiana saw Louisville trailing slightly at 22-21 after the first quarter. However, the Cardinals quickly regained control, scoring the first 18 points of the second quarter and expanding their lead to 40-21. Southern Indiana struggled on the offensive end, failing to make a field goal in the second quarter until 3:41 remained before halftime, having missed their first six attempts.
The Cardinals continued their dominating performance into the third quarter, scoring another 10 points right away and establishing a commanding lead of 28 points.
For Southern Indiana (1-1), Ali Saunders was the standout performer with 15 points, while Meredith Raley chipped in with 10 points. The Screaming Eagles had a successful prior season, concluding with a record of 25-7, including a remarkable 17-1 in conference play, clinching the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship.
Looking ahead, Louisville will head to UT Martin on Tuesday and then prepare to face No. 22 Kentucky on November 16th.
