NEW YORK — An explosion occurred on a residential street in New York City on Friday, involving a parked SUV that contained gas cylinders and various flammable materials. The blast caused significant damage to nearby homes, other vehicles, and overhead power lines, according to fire officials.

Deputy Fire Chief George Healy addressed the media at the site of the incident in Queens, expressing relief that no injuries were reported in what could have been a more catastrophic event. The moment of the explosion, which sent a fireball into the air, was recorded by doorbell camera footage, providing a dramatic view of the incident.

The Fire Department also shared visuals of the scene, displaying the charred remains of the vehicle and the extent of the destruction around it, such as homes with broken windows and heavily damaged cars. The explosion took place at approximately 6:45 a.m. in South Ozone Park, a neighborhood in Queens. It was revealed that the vehicle, which was being utilized for construction purposes, contained several pressurized cylinders. An issue with one of these cylinders led to the explosion, according to Healy.

Although there were lithium-ion batteries stored inside the SUV, they remained intact and did not contribute to the blast. In total, five homes and five vehicles sustained damage due to the explosion. Healy emphasized the importance of safety when dealing with pressurized cylinders and lithium-ion batteries, urging the public to store these items properly to avoid potential hazards. He cautioned, “Please just make sure if you have these devices, they are stored properly and safely in a manner that won’t prevent any sort of injury or damage.”
