Marseille faced their second consecutive defeat in the French league at home, losing 3-1 to Auxerre on Friday night at the Stade Vélodrome.
The atmosphere was tense, with the team’s coach Roberto de Zerbi bearing the brunt of the frustration from the home supporters, who reacted with loud boos and jeers. Despite the efforts of some Auxerre players to offer consolation to struggling Marseille midfielder Adrien Rabiot, the fans showed no mercy towards their team’s performance.
The defeat marked a disappointing continuation for Marseille, who were aiming to maintain pressure on rivals Paris Saint-Germain following their own recent defeat to the same opponents at home.
The game quickly turned sour for Marseille as early as the 10th minute when Lassine Sinayoko took advantage of a defensive blunder from Lilian Brassier to net the opening goal. This marked Sinayoko’s second goal in as many matches for Auxerre, putting Marseille immediately on the back foot.
Things deteriorated further for the home side before halftime, as Gaëtan Perrin and Hamed Junior Traoré struck back-to-back goals for Auxerre within just three minutes.
While Marseille attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, it was Auxerre who came close to extending their lead.
However, a glimmer of hope emerged for Marseille when Clement Akpa was penalized for handball, allowing Mason Greenwood to convert the penalty in the 65th minute.
Despite this brief resurgence, Marseille could not find an equalizer. Auxerre’s defense remained strong, managing to keep control of the match even without several key players due to injuries.
Looking ahead, PSG is set to face Angers on Saturday, while Marseille will have to regroup after this disappointing result.
