IOWA CITY, Iowa — Pryce Sandfort delivered an impressive performance, achieving career-best numbers with six three-pointers and totaling 22 points, leading Iowa to an 89-74 win against Southern on Thursday evening.
Payton Sandfort contributed significantly as well, scoring 17 points while also collecting eight rebounds and dishing out seven assists for the Hawkeyes (2-0). Owen Freeman chipped in 15 points, Josh Dix recorded 14, and Drew Thelwell added 12 points to the mix.
Payton Sandfort, now a senior, demonstrated his shooting skills by making four three-pointers during the matchup, marking his 20th game in his career where he has accomplished hitting at least four from beyond the arc.
Iowa displayed an efficient shooting night, converting 32 of 60 shots from the field for a 53% success rate, including hitting 18 of 40 three-point attempts, which is 45%. A total of seven players from Iowa managed to score from long range.
Leading the way for Southern (0-2) was AJ Barnes, who put up 14 points with an impressive 7-of-11 accuracy from the field. Teammates DaMariee Jones and Brentay Noel each contributed 10 points to their efforts.
The Hawkeyes established their control of the game just three minutes into the contest, taking a 48-37 lead into halftime. Pryce Sandfort had an impactful first half, scoring 11 points, with Josh Dix close behind at nine points.
Southern made an effort to rally early in the second half, narrowing the score to 53-42, but Iowa quickly took control. The largest lead of the game for Iowa was a commanding 85-64 after Payton Sandfort sank another three-pointer with just 3:15 left on the clock.
With this victory, Iowa extends its lead in the series to 3-0 and maintains an unbeaten record of 21-0 against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
