SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs are currently uncertain about the potential return of head coach Gregg Popovich for the remainder of the season after he experienced a medical incident last Saturday, just a couple of hours before the team’s home match against Minnesota.
Acting head coach Mitch Johnson reported that Popovich was “not feeling well” but did not provide further details about the situation surrounding his health.
Since the incident, Popovich has been absent from three games, including the recent home game against Portland.
When questioned about the likelihood of Popovich’s return this season, Johnson admitted he could not provide any clear updates on the situation.
“I would say that … he’s doing good,” Johnson stated. “We’ve been in communication. I’ve had my hands full with this, trying to keep everything afloat. So, I haven’t discussed specifics, and I really don’t know anything … in terms of details.”
At 75 years old, Popovich holds the distinction of being the oldest coach in NBA history. He surpassed the previous record, held by Hubie Brown, who was 71 during his last game as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies back in 2004.
Popovich is recognized as the winningest coach in NBA history, boasting a career total of 1,390 regular-season victories and an additional 170 in the postseason, alongside five NBA championships. He is currently in his 29th season, all of which have been spent with the Spurs.
