BRIDGETOWN, Barbados — Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been suspended for two matches by Cricket West Indies following a public fallout with captain Shai Hope over field placements in a one-day international against England.
During the match on Wednesday, in which the West Indies secured an eight-wicket victory to win the three-match series, Joseph left the field in protest over the field arrangement set by Hope while he was bowling.
The conflict escalated into a lengthy exchange between Joseph and Hope prior to the fourth over. The umpires had to intervene and encourage the players to continue the game. Following an off-side hit during Joseph’s over, the bowler displayed visible frustration towards Hope. When the over concluded, Joseph exited the field, only to return after a short hiatus.
On Thursday, Cricket West Indies released a statement indicating that Joseph’s behavior did not meet the organization’s standards of professionalism.
“Alzarri’s actions were inconsistent with the core values that Cricket West Indies promotes. Such behavior is unacceptable, and we have taken serious measures to convey the importance of this incident,” commented CWI’s director of cricket, Miles Bascombe.
Joseph later issued an apology, acknowledging his behavior. “I understand that my enthusiasm got the better of me,” Joseph stated in the CWI announcement. “I have extended personal apologies to captain Shai Hope, my teammates, and the management team. I also offer my sincerest apologies to the West Indies fans — a momentary lapse in judgment can have significant repercussions, and I sincerely regret any disappointment my actions may have caused.”
With the one-day series wrapped up, England and the West Indies are set to face off in a five-match Twenty20 series beginning Saturday at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown.
