LONDON — In a notable move, Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall received their first calls to join the England national team on Thursday. This selection was made by interim manager Lee Carsley, who is set to guide the squad for their last Nations League matches before Thomas Tuchel officially takes over in January.

Tuchel, who has been appointed to lead the national team with an eye on the 2026 World Cup, has yet to influence the current roster. Carsley will oversee upcoming fixtures against Greece and Ireland, showcasing his commitment to integrating a new wave of talent. Since stepping in for Gareth Southgate in August, he has already granted debuts to several young players, including Angel Gomes, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Noni Madueke.

In discussing the selection process, Carsley clarified that he had not collaborated with Tuchel in finalizing the squad. “He hasn’t had any influence on the squad selection. I’ve spoken to him by text, but it’s literally congratulations,” Carsley stated. He emphasized the respect Tuchel has for the ongoing efforts of the current coaching staff, affirming, “We’ve been left to it, like we always have.”

The England team is slated to face Greece in Athens on November 14, followed by a match against Ireland at Wembley on November 17. Following these games, Carsley will return to his position as coach of the England Under-21 squad, ready to continue his developmental work with younger players.
