AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Longhorns have announced the departure of wide receiver Johntay Cook II, a notable recruit from the 2023 class who had limited playing time this season. Head coach Steve Sarkisian shared the news on Thursday, indicating that Cook’s exit was a mutual decision. Sarkisian expressed his respect for Cook and his family, wishing them success in their future endeavors.
Cook, who was regarded as one of the top wide receiver prospects nationally when he committed to the Longhorns from Dallas, saw some action during this season, making eight catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns over six games. However, his last reception came during the game against Mississippi State on September 28, and he had previously recorded eight receptions for 136 yards across 14 games in the 2022 season.
The young receiver had expectations to play a larger role in the Texas passing offense this year. Unfortunately for Cook, he was unable to secure significant playing time due to a crowded receiving lineup, which included notable transfers like Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden, and Silas Bolden, along with the rise of DeAndre Moore and freshman Trey Wingo.
The Texas Longhorns, currently holding a 7-1 record and positioned at No. 5 in the College Football Playoff standings, are set to face the Florida Gators (4-4) this Saturday. The team aims to maintain their momentum as they compete in the Southeastern Conference with only one loss amongst the top contenders.
