PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have suffered another setback, as young guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to be sidelined for a minimum of two weeks due to a right hamstring injury, according to an insider familiar with the situation.
The source remained anonymous, as the team has not publicly provided details regarding Maxey’s injury. Maxey sustained the injury during the 76ers’ recent defeat against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. Further examinations were scheduled for Thursday to assess the extent of the injury.
Coming into this season, the 76ers were regarded as strong contenders in the Eastern Conference. However, they are currently struggling with a disappointing record of 1-6 ahead of their matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers. The team has been without their star player, 2023 MVP Joel Embiid, who has been out for what the organization refers to as left knee management, in addition to serving a three-game suspension due to an incident involving a media member. Furthermore, Paul George has only participated in two games this season as he continues to recover from a knee injury acquired during the preseason.
In the game against the Clippers, Maxey managed to score 12 points while playing for 32 minutes.
The 24-year-old Maxey was recognized as an All-Star for the first time last season and was also awarded the title of the NBA’s most improved player. During the offseason, he secured a significant five-year contract extension worth $204 million, reflecting his importance to the team.
The 76ers will look to regroup as they navigate these early challenges in the season, hoping for the swift return of Maxey and a full roster.
