Berlin – The office of the federal prosecutor in Germany announced the arrest of an American man on Thursday, alleging that he engaged in espionage activities for China.
The individual, identified only as Martin D., was apprehended in Frankfurt, where authorities also conducted a search of his residence.
Martin D. previously served with the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Germany. He is under strong suspicion of having made arrangements to function as an intelligence asset for a foreign government.
According to the investigation carried out by Germany’s domestic intelligence service, he initiated contact with various Chinese governmental bodies earlier this year, offering to provide classified military insights from the U.S. to a Chinese intelligence agency.
The sensitive information he proposed relaying appears to have been obtained during his tenure in the U.S. military, as noted in the prosecutor’s statement, although no additional specifics were disclosed regarding the nature of the information.
