Germany incorrectly includes Latvian athlete in Nations League roster

FRANKFURT, Germany — On Thursday, Germany was forced to quickly update its Nations League squad list after a mistake led to the inclusion of a Latvian player.

The name that mistakenly appeared was Dario Sits, a 20-year-old forward currently playing for Helmond Sport in the Dutch second division, where he is on loan from the Italian club, Parma. Sits made his international debut for Latvia just last month, and his closest encounter with the German national team occurred when he played against the Germany Under-21s in 2022 while representing Latvia.

After the error was identified, the German football federation promptly removed Sits from the list and attributed the oversight to “a technical error in the database” in a statement sent via email.

Aside from this mishap, the squad selected for the upcoming matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Hungary features few unexpected choices. Germany has already secured a position in the Nations League quarterfinals for the next year and is determined to take the top spot in its group.

With Marc-André ter Stegen of Barcelona still sidelined due to injury, Stefan Ortega, the backup goalkeeper from Manchester City, could earn his first cap for the German team. Ortega has made four appearances for City so far this season and is among the three goalkeepers chosen, alongside Alexander Nübel from Stuttgart and Oliver Baumann from Hoffenheim.

Returning to the squad are Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, both of whom missed the previous matches due to injuries. Additionally, Felix Nmecha and Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund have been recalled to the team for the first time this year.
