CLEVELAND — Renowned catcher Austin Hedges has inked a one-year deal, making his return to the Cleveland Guardians for the upcoming season.

The organization highlighted Hedges’ substantial leadership as a pivotal element that contributed to the team’s successful 92-69 record this past season, which culminated in securing the AL Central title under the stewardship of rookie manager Stephen Vogt. Cleveland triumphed over Detroit in a closely contested division series but ultimately fell to the New York Yankees in a five-game AL Championship Series.

Details regarding the financial aspects of the contract have not been disclosed at this time.

Hedges, aged 32, played a crucial role as a bridge between manager Vogt and the players, particularly when navigating a series of early-season injuries plaguing the pitching roster. He provided mentorship to rookie catcher Bo Naylor during his inaugural Major League season and participated in eight of the Guardians’ ten postseason matches.

In his exit interviews, Hedges indicated a desire to return to the Guardians, which aligned with the team’s sentiments towards him.

“He’s not just a mascot; he’s an incredibly skilled player,” Vogt stated after the season. “He brings so much to the team that isn’t visible to outsiders. He elevates our performance, pushes me to improve, and motivates the coaching staff and his teammates. His energy is infectious every single day, and his proficiency as a Major League Baseball player is undeniable. You don’t have a lengthy career without merit.”

Previously, Hedges rejoined the Guardians after having played in 2023 for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Texas Rangers, where he secured a World Series title.

During Hedges’ 46 starts, the Guardians achieved a commendable 26-20 record. Despite struggles at the plate, his seasoned presence earned him postseason starts, where he played crucial late-game roles, taking over for Naylor in high-pressure situations.

Before joining the Guardians, Hedges spent more than five seasons with the San Diego Padres before the team acquired him in a mid-2020 trade.
