NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans have placed center Lloyd Cushenberry and veteran safety Quandre Diggs on injured reserve as of Wednesday. To bolster their secondary following Diggs’ injury, they have signed Mike Edwards.
“With Quandre’s injury, it was crucial to bring in another player for us, and we were fortunate that a solid option became available,” Titans coach Brian Callahan commented regarding the addition of Edwards.
Both players sustained injuries during last week’s overtime victory against the New England Patriots. Currently, the Titans hold a record of 2-6 and have ten players on injured reserve. This list includes starting cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, who was added to it on September 27 due to a groin injury.
Callahan revealed that Cushenberry suffered an unspecified ankle injury late in the third quarter of the game. Meanwhile, Diggs injured his left foot during a tackle early in the second quarter, requiring a cart for transport to the locker room. Reports indicate that Diggs will require surgery due to a Lisfranc injury.
Cushenberry joined the Titans with a four-year contract that guarantees $26 million out of a total of $50 million, signed in March. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 315 pounds, Cushenberry offered a much-needed size upgrade at center, having started all 57 games during his time with Denver after being selected in the third round out of LSU in 2020.
His presence has been significant for the offensive line, particularly as they navigate challenges with a rookie left tackle in JC Latham, the seventh overall pick from Alabama, and left guard Peter Skoronski, the 11th overall pick from Northwestern last year. Right guard Dillon Radunz had also missed the previous match due to a foot injury, but the Titans are optimistic that he will be back in the lineup when they face the Chargers (5-3) this Sunday, allowing Daniel Brunskill to transition to center.
At 31 years old, Diggs is a nine-year NFL veteran who signed a one-year deal with the Titans in August. Mike Brown stepped in to replace Diggs during the game. The team is also hopeful that cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who has been sidelined for the past three games with a quadriceps injury, is nearing a return.
Edwards brings experience to the team as he has started in 28 of 78 games across six seasons in the NFL. Drafted in the third round in 2019 from Kentucky by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he played with the Kansas City Chiefs last season and was with the Buffalo Bills at the beginning of this season. Throughout his career, he has recorded eight interceptions, 236 tackles, one forced fumble, and five fumble recoveries.
