SAN ANTONIO — Alex Bregman, the third baseman for the Houston Astros, has undergone surgery to remove a bone chip from his right elbow.
This information was disclosed by his agent, Scott Boras, during a press conference held on Wednesday at the general managers meetings. The news came as a surprise, as the Houston Astros had not previously made any announcements regarding Bregman’s surgery.

Boras confirmed that Bregman has completed the procedure and is expected to return to swinging a bat in a few weeks, indicating that the recovery process is on track.

Last Thursday, Bregman entered free agency after his significant $100 million, five-year contract, which covered the period from 2020 to 2024, came to an end.
The 30-year-old player had a season in which he posted a batting average of .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, contributing to his career totals of a .272 batting average, 191 home runs, and 663 RBIs over his nine seasons in Major League Baseball, all spent with the Astros.

Boras also mentioned that Bregman is open to transitioning to second base if necessary, despite having played exclusively at third base since the start of the 2020 season.
