Democrat Laura Friedman emerged victorious in her bid for a U.S. House seat in California on Wednesday, successfully defeating her Republican opponent, physician Alex Balekian.
Friedman will be succeeding Democratic Representative Adam Schiff, who has chosen to pursue a seat in the Senate.
Having first been elected to the California State Assembly in 2016, Friedman brings to her new position a wealth of experience, including her time as a city council member and mayor of Glendale.
Her victory represents the interests of the 30th Congressional District, which encompasses a diverse area of Los Angeles County, reaching into Hollywood.
The time of the announcement declaring Friedman as the winner was noted at 12:14 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
